Are you frustrated with the standard cable service companies? Had it with the lack of diversity in programming, the unpredictability of service interruption, the lack of a digital services, and the excavating costs. If this sounds like your situation you should really think about satellite TV.
There is really no good reason why you would want to install your own system. Because most dish deals include better than Free Shipping since the installer brings all equipment directly to you there are no shipping delays.
But before you decide to purchase a satellite dish system here are a few things to consider. Start by carefully evaluating your situation and determine if the satellite TV system is the right choice for you and your circumstances.
Are you a homeowneror or do you rent?
Check to be sure your home isn't covered under a homeowner's association ruling. Many of these associations have rules that can limit the placement of a satellite tv dish. Please note, your Home Owners Association may try to keep you from putting up a satellite dish, they will usually claim that the Satellite dish is in a common use area. You do hav rights and protection under the Satellite Home Owner Improvement Act. If you rent check your renters agreement. Most will allow a satellite dish installation.
Do you live in an apartment or condominium?
You need to have a clear unobstructed view of the southern sky? The dish needs to be placed on the south side of the of the building. Also, consider whether trees or other buildings would interfere with the signal. Once again, apartments and condos often have rules which may make it difficult for you to install a dish.
Learn your rights under the Satellite Home Owner Improvement Act. It may be possible to get together with other condo owners and install a dish and a multi-switch. This is a way you can all enjoy the benefits of satellite TV but limit the amount of dishes mounted on the rooftop of the building. If you are living in an apartment look to see if your balcony offers a unobstructed southern exposure?
NOTE; A landlord cannot prohibit the mounting of the satellite to a balcony. Nor can they require the dish to be installed by an electrician or for the renter to get a permit for the installation.
Installations are usually performed by a service company. The installation of the dish and equipment will be subcontracted out to experienced installers by the company you purchased from.
The price of satellite dishes and receivers and associated equipment continues to drop, and the service is incredibly affordable. They are a lot like the cell phone companies in that many offer free satellite receivers, dish and installation and make their money back on the monthly user service fee. You may be wondering if you can install the dish and save the expense of service and installation charges by a professional.
Satellite TV can be an easy do it yourself project. Like many do it yourself projects it requires some skills and may not be the best first project to start with for the first timer. Professional installation can save the you many headaches and offer fast service and quick viewing.
With that said, if you would still like to try to do it yourself you will need a complete satellite TV installation package. You will need a satellite dish, the receiver, and the coax or coaxial cable. Coax cable is the round cable that carries the signal from the dish to the satellite receiver and then on to the TV or VCR. This is the same cable used to hook up your VCR to your television and is also used to by the cable TV companies. You will need to decide where you will need to place your satellite dish. Your satellite dish must point due south. You will need to be careful to avoid a location that will have trees, branches or any other obstruction.
A satellite dish can be attached to the house or mounted to a post or pole that is sunk into the ground. I used my old TV antenna pole. The location should be easily accessible for routine cleaning of the dish and possible readjustment.
The satellite installation requires a little more than simply placing the dish on the house, roof or post. You have to make adjustments to the dish to get the correct adjustment of a satellite dish to catch the signal.
First you will need to run the coax cable. This is the standard round cable television cable and VCR cable. I did away with my cable tv provider and simply un-hooked my cable from the cable company and hooked my satellite dish cable into this cable. Then I unscrewed the coax cable from you TV and reattached it onto my satellite receiver and then I used another piece of coax cable to go from the receiver to the television. This carries the signal from the dish to the receiver in and too the TV or VCR from the satellite and receiver. If you can’t do this you will need to drill a small hole into the wall to allow the cable to pass into the house. Don’t forget to plug the receiver into an outlet and connect the receiver to the television. Check the signal and make minor adjustments
You will need to adjust the side to side or (horizontal) and the vertical adjustment of the satellite dish. Also the upward tilt of the satellite dish ((measured in degrees)) that is required to aim and receive transmissions from the communications satellite. This is the angular distance between from the horizon to the satellite, or the 'up and down' positioning of the dish. The installation package comes with simple easy to follow aiming directions. I made my complete installation without help. I set up the dish and pointed it as per the directions. The receiver has a signal strenght meter you can watch on your TV screen. Simply keep making small adjustments until maximum signal strength is reached. If you have a walkie talky or a cell phone and have someone watching the TV screen for you this can make things much easier. Your satellite receiver is programmed to give you the coordinates. The satellite owner's manual will provide instructions for making the adjustments.
Yes you can install your own satellite dish. It can be easy are hard. Look over your shills and yoursituation. You may not be comfortable with adjusting the dish for correct positioning. So choosing a service provider to do the instalation may be best. The most important thing is to set the dish up and start enjoying the programming as soon as possible.
